At the beginning of the year 2000, following an ultrasound examination of my thyroid gland, I was diagnosed with grade 1 mixed goiter. This diagnosis came as quite a shock because, until then, I hadn’t experienced any serious symptoms. The term “mixed goiter” refers to an enlargement of the thyroid gland that contains both cystic and solid components, and “grade 1” indicates a mild or initial stage of this condition. After receiving this diagnosis, I immediately began to take the medications prescribed by my endocrinologist. However, alongside the prescribed treatment, I also decided to try several folk remedies, which I had heard about through friends, family, and traditional knowledge passed down over generations.

One of the most effective folk remedies I tried involved walnuts. This remedy is quite elaborate but yields remarkable results if done correctly. I started by taking fourteen walnuts, which I washed thoroughly to remove any dirt or residue. After washing, I dried them completely. Then, I crushed the shells into small pieces and set aside the kernels (the edible part inside the shell). The crushed walnut shells were wrapped in a thick cloth and then pounded vigorously with a hammer. This was done to release the beneficial substances found in the shells. Next, I placed the crushed shells into a clean glass jar, poured half a liter of vodka over them, sealed the jar tightly, and stored it in a dark, warm place for seven days. After a week, I strained the infusion and transferred it into a dark glass bottle to protect it from light, then stored it in the refrigerator.

I took this walnut shell tincture every morning on an empty stomach, one tablespoon at a time. As time passed, I decided to increase the dosage to three times a day, each dose taken about one hour before meals, continuing this regimen for one month. Apart from addressing the goiter itself, this walnut tincture is believed to help with various other health issues, such as tumors, bronchial problems, and the removal of salts from the body. The natural properties of walnuts, combined with the alcohol extraction, create a powerful remedy that promotes healing in a gentle but effective way.

For multinodular goiter, I also used a similar preparation: one cup of crushed walnut shells infused in half a liter of vodka, sealed and left to steep in a cool, dark place for thirty days. I took one tablespoon of this preparation every morning on an empty stomach, one to two hours before getting up. Importantly, I did not drink water or eat food immediately afterward, to ensure better absorption of the tincture. This amount was intended for one full course of treatment, after which I rested for 10 to 15 days before repeating the cycle.

For two years, I followed this combined treatment faithfully. During this time, I paid close attention to my diet as well. I made a conscious effort to include more seafood, such as fish and seaweed, which are naturally rich in iodine and other minerals essential for thyroid health. At the same time, I avoided foods that were excessively fatty, spicy, sweet, or salty, as these can worsen thyroid problems or interfere with the effectiveness of treatment.

Herbal medicine also played an important role in my recovery. I regularly drank an infusion made from purslane, a common plant known for its medicinal properties. To prepare it, I poured one cup of boiling water over two tablespoons of dried purslane, covered the container, and let it steep for two hours. I drank one tablespoon of this infusion three to five times a day. Additionally, I took cumin seed drops (available in pharmacies) in doses of 20 to 30 drops three times daily before meals. These natural supplements helped support my overall health and improved my body’s ability to cope with the thyroid condition.

After two years of following this combined treatment, I underwent another examination. The results were very encouraging. Instead of the mixed goiter that was initially diagnosed, only a few small nodules remained in my thyroid gland. This marked improvement confirmed that the treatment plan I followed had been effective.

Naturally, the medications prescribed by my doctor played a crucial role in managing the condition, but I firmly believe that my personal dedication to natural remedies and lifestyle changes also contributed significantly to my recovery.

From a medical perspective, walnuts have been widely used in folk medicine to treat many ailments, including goiter. Their healing properties are attributed to the many beneficial substances contained within the nut and its shell. Particularly noteworthy is the presence of natural iodine and compounds that help regulate iodine metabolism in the body, which is essential for healthy thyroid function. Taking natural iodine supplements or iodine-containing preparations helps normalize iodine levels in the body and supports the thyroid gland’s hormone production.

In conclusion, dealing with thyroid problems such as goiter can be challenging, but combining conventional medicine with traditional remedies and dietary changes can yield positive results. My experience is a testament to the power of persistence, holistic care, and the benefits of learning from both modern science and ancient wisdom.
