Now I Always Buy Vaseline Instead of Expensive Medicines! Here’s What It Can Do!

Because of various health issues, we often rush to pharmacies to buy expensive medications. Very often, we do this automatically, without really thinking about the fact that many conditions can be treated at home with simple remedies or even inexpensive ointments. Sometimes these alternatives work just as well—or even better—than costly pharmaceutical products. One such example is the well-known petroleum jelly, commonly called Vaseline.

From my own experience, I have become convinced that Vaseline has a surprisingly wide range of uses in traditional and home medicine. It is affordable, easy to find, and extremely versatile. Below, I would like to share several practical ways in which Vaseline can be used to support health and skin care in everyday life.

Treating Bunions on the Feet

As my mother grew older, she developed a bunion on her toes. She was worried that her foot would gradually become deformed and that the pain would worsen over time. Surgery was something she wanted to avoid, so we started looking for reliable folk remedies. Fortunately, we learned about a traditional method that includes a very familiar ingredient—petroleum jelly.

We bought a package of iodized salt from the store and poured half of it into a pot. Then we added just enough water to slightly cover the salt. We placed the pot on low heat, stirring until the water completely evaporated. While the salt was still hot, we added four packs of medical-grade petroleum jelly and mixed everything thoroughly.

My mother placed the warm mixture onto a piece of woolen fabric, covered it with another cloth, and applied it directly to the affected bone on her foot. She secured the compress well and left it on overnight. She repeated this procedure for 15 consecutive days. Gradually, the pain decreased, and the bunion noticeably reduced in size. This simple method brought her relief and peace of mind without the need for expensive treatments.

A Remedy for Treating Wounds

Unfortunately, no one is immune to injuries. Once, while cooking at our country house, I accidentally cut my hand deeply. There was a lot of bleeding, and it was important to stop it as quickly as possible. I thoroughly cleaned the wound and then applied a thick layer of petroleum jelly.

Surprisingly, this helped stop the bleeding. I wrapped the wound tightly with a bandage and kept it covered for three days without removing it. After three days, I changed the bandage, reapplied Vaseline, and wrapped it again for another three days. The wound healed very quickly, and I was left with no scar at all.

Since then, petroleum jelly has always had a permanent place in my first-aid kit as an emergency remedy. It creates a protective barrier over the skin, helping to retain moisture and support the natural healing process.

Helping with Burns

Vaseline can also be helpful in cases of burns. Several years ago, my sister suffered a deep burn from hot water. She tried various treatments, but the healing process was slow. I suggested she try petroleum jelly.

She applied a thick layer of Vaseline to the burned area every three days. After just 12 days, there was no visible trace of the burn left on her skin. The skin healed smoothly and evenly. While burns should always be treated carefully—especially severe ones—this experience showed us that Vaseline can be a valuable supportive remedy during recovery.

Vaseline Ointment Enriched with Propolis

If you enrich petroleum jelly with propolis, the result is a truly unique healing ointment that can be helpful in many situations. This combination is used for treating wounds, burns, skin rashes, and irritation. It can also help reduce inflammation associated with sinusitis, abscesses, ear pain, and hemorrhoids.

This natural ointment is worth preparing for your home medicine cabinet, as it can come in handy more often than you might expect.

How to Prepare It:

Buy two or three 100 g jars of petroleum jelly from the pharmacy.

Place the Vaseline in a separate bowl and heat it gently using a steam (water) bath until it melts.

Add 10 g of propolis to the melted jelly and keep the mixture on very low heat for another two to three hours. Stir occasionally to ensure even consistency.

Afterward, strain the mixture and pour it into small jars with wide openings, preferably made of dark glass.

The propolis–Vaseline ointment can be stored in the bathroom or pantry and used whenever needed.

Why Choose Vaseline?

The main advantage of Vaseline is its simplicity. It does not contain unnecessary additives, it is inexpensive, and it can be combined with other natural ingredients to enhance its effects. Many people underestimate its potential simply because of its low price, assuming that effectiveness must always come with a high cost.

In reality, petroleum jelly has stood the test of time and remains a staple in many households around the world. It protects the skin, locks in moisture, and supports natural healing processes without irritating sensitive skin.
