Diagnosis of Early-Stage Glaucoma and My Approach to Treatment
I was diagnosed with early-stage glaucoma. Naturally, at first, I was scared. Hearing the word “glaucoma” can be frightening — it’s an eye disease often associated with vision loss and, in some cases, even blindness. However, I made a firm decision not to surrender to the illness. Instead, I chose to actively manage and treat it in a natural, effective way. My hope is that my condition will no longer progress.
Glaucoma is primarily characterized by increased intraocular pressure (pressure inside the eye). This happens because excess fluid builds up in the eye, which creates pressure on the optic nerve, potentially damaging it and causing vision problems. Although I’m not deeply versed in the medical science behind this disease, I know enough to understand that in the early stages, it is possible to slow down or even halt vision deterioration with the right treatment.
Natural Remedies I Use: Herbal Eye Drops and Saline Washes
Instead of immediately resorting to harsh pharmaceuticals, I opted to incorporate natural treatments into my routine. My doctor advised me on some simple herbal remedies that have been used traditionally and are known to be rich in healing properties.
Herbal Eye Drops:
I apply drops made from nettle (Urtica dioica) and marshmallow (Althaea officinalis) infusions directly into my eyes. These plants are renowned for their anti-inflammatory and soothing effects, which help reduce irritation and support eye health.
How I Prepare the Herbal Infusion:
To make the infusion, take half a cup of fresh nettle leaves and one teaspoon of marshmallow flowers. Pour one cup of hot water over the herbs, cover, and let the mixture steep for 8-9 hours in a dark place (usually overnight). After straining, the infusion is ready for use.
I use this infusion to rinse my eyes two to three times a day. Even better, I soak a clean gauze pad in the infusion and apply it as a compress on the eyes twice daily. This method allows the herbs to soothe and nourish the eye tissues effectively.
Saline Nasal Washes – An Unusual But Effective Method
In addition to the eye rinses, I perform saline nasal washes. This might sound surprising because the rinsing is not done directly in the eyes, but through the nasal passages. The reason this works is the anatomical connection between the eyes and the nasal cavity via the tear ducts. When the nasal mucosa is stimulated and cleansed, it activates tissue metabolism and circulation in the eye area as well.
How to Prepare and Perform Nasal Washes:
You can prepare your own saline solution by dissolving one teaspoon of salt in 0.5 liters of warm water (around 37 degrees Celsius). Alternatively, you can purchase a sterile physiological saline solution from a pharmacy.
Pour the saline solution into a teapot designed for nasal rinsing. If you don’t have one, you can adapt a teapot by attaching a soft rubber tube or a nasal aspirator, preferably one with a small hole pierced to allow water to flow gently.
To perform the rinse, tilt your head to the side — if rinsing the left nostril, tilt your head to the right. This position ensures the water flows through the nasal passages and out through the other nostril without running down your throat. Repeat the process for the other nostril by tilting your head in the opposite direction. It’s important to breathe through your mouth during the procedure.
Although it may sound unpleasant at first, the nasal rinse is quite tolerable once you get used to it. I perform this nasal wash twice daily for one week at a time, following which I take a break. I repeat this twice a year as part of my routine.
The Impact of This Treatment on My Glaucoma
Thanks to this combined approach of herbal eye rinses and saline nasal washes, I have noticed that my glaucoma has stopped progressing. My vision remains stable, and the pressure inside my eyes is better managed.
Additionally, I’ve experienced improved digestion after meals (less heaviness in the stomach), fewer headaches, better sleep patterns, and healthier skin. These positive changes are likely connected to the cleansing and circulatory benefits of the treatments.
Medical Insight on the Herbs and Method
According to my doctor:
Nettle is a plant rich in vitamins K and C. It has anti-inflammatory properties, helps stop bleeding, and promotes tissue regeneration.
Marshmallow contains glycosides and is traditionally used for heart issues such as heart failure and paroxysmal tachycardia. It is generally considered cardioprotective.
How exactly these herbs help in glaucoma is still not fully understood scientifically, but their anti-inflammatory and circulatory benefits likely play a role.
As for the nasal rinses, the tear ducts open into the nasal mucosa, and stimulating the nasal mucosa through saline rinses activates tissue metabolism not only in the nasal passages but also in the surrounding eye tissues. This enhanced tissue turnover may contribute to slowing the progression of glaucoma.
Why This Approach is Valuable
Modern medicine often focuses on controlling symptoms with eye drops that reduce intraocular pressure. However, natural remedies aim to support the body’s healing processes and improve overall health. This holistic approach may help delay or even prevent the worsening of chronic conditions like glaucoma.
Moreover, these methods are affordable, accessible, and free of the side effects commonly associated with pharmaceuticals. For someone newly diagnosed or looking for complementary care, these natural remedies can provide a gentle yet effective option.
Final Thoughts
Receiving a glaucoma diagnosis can be frightening, but it doesn’t mean losing hope. By taking proactive steps and incorporating natural therapies alongside conventional treatments, it’s possible to maintain vision and improve quality of life.
I encourage others with early-stage glaucoma to explore such natural treatments with their doctor’s guidance. With patience and dedication, the progression of the disease can be managed, and everyday life can be lived with confidence and clarity.
